Background:

  • None of us know where God is going to take us
  • We will have some haters and there will be some in the crowd that will not be happy for us
  • We will not always be celebrated
  • It is important to understand there is jealousy and some can't help it
  • A jealous heart is a complex emotion and their state of driven by insecurity and they have fear of losing something or someone valuable
  • Some are jealous of other relationship or their friendships with other people
  • They will say things that are not true
  • There are two sides to every story
  • It only takes one time to get stung by that person that we begin to see and understand why the other person was silent and did not say anything; We find out the person is a fraud
  • Human jealousy is most often destructive and not constructive (Genesis 26:14-15)
  • When we think of jealousy we think of a person that can not help themselves, strong emotions to tear apart strong relationships, family, and friends
  • David could not figure out why the children of Israel were hiding out in the hills
  • David wanted to know what was going on
  • When he found out what was going on he said he would fight the giant
  • This caused a riff in the family
  • They were concerned because if David did not go they would have to go
  • David was sure that with his relationship with God he could go to the valley and defeat this giant
  • David gave Saul his resume: he took out a bear and a lion
  • We can not get anyone else's anointing
  • David wanted to use what he was used to, the same thing he conquered the bear and lion with
  • Goliath had on all this armor to cover himself but David went out to fight him open with no armor on
  • Saul began to be fond of David

Key Sermon Points:

1. Human jealousy can destroy relationships

  • Saul's appreciation for David turned into jealously
  • In a jealous rage, Saul attempted to murder David by hurling a spear at him
  • To us jealousy may not be a major sign but in reality it is one step short of murder
  • Jealousy starts as a bitter rival, then it moves into trying to assassinate that person's character
  • It is just in some of their nature and they have not given it to God
  • A person that is jealous they look for ways to harm another person in word and action
  • We must be aware of letting jealousy get a foothold in our lives
  • Jealousy destroys and consumes emotions like swallowing potion, it does not harm the target but it slowly eats away at the person who takes it
  • Jealousy is a constant thing that harms people
  • Saul explicitly elevates his anger towards David
  • All David did was do the best he could do by helping Saul be the best he could be
  • David was loved by the people
  • Does jealousy plague you?
  • Are you jealous over someone else and what they have and their accomplishments?
  • Jonathan recognized the anointing on David and that there was something special
  • He recognized that David is next in line to be a king even though his father did not
  • It would be natural to strike back but we should love them anyway from a distance and pray for them
  • Jonathan and David loved each other
  • Even after Jonathan is dead, David demonstrates this

2. Love is the best weapon against jealousy

  • Saul began to be angry because of what the women had said
  • Saul believed that David was eyeing his kingdom
  • When we do what God tells us to do people will be jealous of us
  • Sometimes there is not anything we did, they could be looking at our life and simply want our life
  • David was secure while Saul was insecure
  • God will put people in place to do things and check their heart and expose what they are hiding

3. Is what you hear about others cause you to be jealous?

  • We cannot let another person's success make us jealous
  • We ought to be happy for that person
  • The same God that did it for them can do it for us
  • If we are living right and doing right then we are next
  • Saul could not handle David's success or victories, especially when the women composed that song
  • People are jealous of us when God blesses us
  • People will not celebrate every promotion
  • Joseph's brothers were jealous of him and the cloak his dad made
  • Jealousy is a slow poison that will take us out of here if we do not deal with it
  • We must have a heart of compassion and of love; A Heartbeat for God... not just in word but in action
  • Everybody needs a David as a friend to go into battle
