Background:
- We need great examples
- A mother and grandmother who sets a great example for her children will go a long way
- The things that we do will last for only a little while
- If a mother sets a godly example for her children, that will go from this life to the next life
- Parenting involves both words and actions
- Our actions speak louder than words
- Children learn values and morals from observing their parents
- One of the most important things parents can do is to bring their children to church to show them how important worship is
- We must teach them how to earn money (which doesn't grow on trees)
- We must teach them to work for what they want
- We are responsible for the example that we set
- Timothy's father was a Greek, but his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois were described as dedicated to bring Timothy up in the Lord
- Mothers must be dedicated
- What you do in the home will be emulated by your children
- It starts in the home
Key Sermon Points:
1. Paul's appreciation for Timothy
- Paul appreciated Timothy because he was raised right
- People cannot know you if they don't appreciate them
- Paul was a blessing to Timothy and Timothy was a blessing to Paul (it was a two way street)
- Paul was grateful for what God had done through Timothy
- Although Paul was incarcerated, he was rejoicing and encouraging Timothy
- We must tell and show people that we appreciate them
- We must still encourage others no matter what we are going through
- Timothy faithfully served together with Paul
- What kind of example are we setting?
2. Timothy's faith stood out to Paul
- Timothy had genuine faith that he got from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (two generations)
- Faith rests on what Jesus had done (1 Corinthians 13:13)
- When mothers and grandmothers share their faith with their children and grandchildren that will go on for generations
- We must let people know that we trust God
- Paul attributes Timothy's faith to his grandmother and mother (Acts 16:1-3)
- If the parents don't teach their kids, then the world will
- Our faith should stand out...we ought not to be ashamed of who, what, and why we believe
- Eunice and Lois didn't live for themselves, but for their kids who was taught at an early age
- We must share our faith so that we don't become a generation that forgets God (Judges 2:10)
3. Paul encourages Timothy to be bold
- Paul recognized that Timothy was getting a little stagnant
- So Paul encourages Timothy to stir up or rekindle the gift that God had given him
- Spiritual gifts must be activated and nurtured to be fully effective
- Paul could give the advice to Timothy and Timothy could take the advice because of what they saw in each other
- Don't dismiss or make excuses when kids are doing the wrong things...instead correct them
