Background:
- Having a hunger for God's Word means having an intense passion to read and study God's Word (John 6:35)
- It is important to understand that we must crave God's Word (Matthew 5:6)
- We must not only study God's Word, but meditate on it as well
- Reasons for not having a hunger for God's Word:
- Unconfessed sins
- The temptations of this world will curb our appetite for God's Word
- Busyness, which is a trick of the devil to keep us from studying God's Word
- Isolation from other believers
- A famine (Amos 8:11-12)
Key Sermon Points:
1. Jeremiah's plea to God
- Jeremiah plead his case before God
- Jeremiah was setup for failure (Jeremiah 7:27)
- Jeremiah pleaded with God that remember him because God knows him
- Jeremiah knew he was dealing with an omnipotent and omniscient God
- Jeremiah then moved to God's mercy and love
- Jeremiah wanted his enemies to be removed
2. We must eat God's Word
- Jeremiah suffered some rebuke and so will we
- When God's Word came, Jeremiah ate them...and rejoiced in God's Word
- God's Word gives light unto our dark minds (Psalm 119:131)
- Our visions are impaired because of sin and preconceived notions...it's only when we go into God's Word that we get clarity
- The Word can do some great things in us
- Only God can change people
- We ought to want people to be who God would have them to be (to bring blessings)
- When we start studying God's Word, we will loose track of time and want more
- We should be on meat and not on milk (Hebrews 5:12-13)
- God's Word changes (Jeremiah 15:16)
3. God's Word brings joy to our hearts
- Studying God's Word brings joy by being in the presence of God
- The joy that we have is not found in what the media says, not found in the White House, but found in the Light House...found in God's Word
- True joy is deeper than happiness and can be felt despite deep trouble (Psalm 42:1-2)
- Jeremiah had joy
- Jeremiah separated himself from those that mocked God and we must too
- Jeremiah had a dislike for what sinners liked
- One minute Jeremiah was praising God and the next minute Jeremiah was doubting God and his Word...and sometimes we do the same when we forget that God is still in control and from where he has brought us
- Key characteristics for a hunger for God's Word:
- Regular Bible Study consistently
- Intense desire to learn a genuine curiosity to discover new truths and deeper meaning in the Bible
- Personal application to our daily lives
- Spending time in prayer asking God for insights and understanding of the Scriptures
