Background:

  • We must see Jesus
  • We all have a reservation with death that cannot be cancelled (Hebrew 9:27)
  • There is no family plan...we must stand before the King for ourselves

Key Sermon Points:

  1. They hated Zacchaeus
    1. This was Jesus last time passing through Jericho on his way to the cross
    2. Zacchaeus was a wealthy chief tax collector that extracted more from his own people, which was a greater burden to them
    3. Thus, the Jews hated him
    4. He had the comfort and money that he could want, but was empty inside
    5. He sought to see Jesus
    6. Zacchaeus had some obstacles:
      • He was small in stature
      • He was self-conscious
      • He had low self-esteem
    7. What is stopping people from seeing Jesus?
      • Pride...God hates pride
      • Self-righteousness
    8. The crowd blocked his access
    9. Zacchaeus climbed the tree and Jesus saw him
    10. Jesus knew who he was
    11. Jesus knows our names
  2. Jesus' personal call on his life
    1. All of us must understand that we have a personal call on our lives (e.g. Moses, Joshua, Samuel, his disciples, and us)
    2. He calls sinners to repentance (Luke 5:32)
    3. There's a call on our lives and we must listen to it and respond to the call
  3. He openly confess his sins
    1. When you come to Jesus people will talk about you
    2. The best thing that we can do is to give our lives to Jesus
    3. Zacchaeus gave his open confession of his sins and the crowd made fun of him
    4. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God
