Background:

  • Have you ever wondered what Jesus looked like when he walked the earth?
  • He didn't have red hair and blue eyes
  • He was a Jew (not white or black)
  • The book of Revelation presents Jesus in his glorified form

Key Sermon Points:

1. John's tribulation on the island of Patmos

  • All of us will have troubles and afflictions in this life
  • All of our troubles will not be over when we come to Christ
  • Strengthen the souls of the disciples, who must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22)
  • John received the vision of the glorified Lord while in exile
  • While in the darkest time on Patmos, John received the most extensive revelation of future events
  • In our darkest moments we will find God there
  • He was shut out from the world, but shut in with God
  • Sometimes we have to get rid of the noise around us in order to hear what God has to say
  • John was an instrument ready to be used
  • If we are to be used as an instrument, it will cost us something
  • God always has a way out for us when Satan has a stronghold on us
  • It was God who kept us in our right mind when our enemies thought that they had us
  • John was in the Spirit on the Lord's day (not in the flesh), which meant that God was in control
  • John moved upward to Heaven and then forward to the future
  • "I am the Alpha and the Omega" (v. 11) refers to Jesus' deity
  • The message was for the 7 churches...each church today aligns with one of those churches

2. The vision John saw

  • John's experience transcended the bounds of normal human apprehension
  • John was under the Holy Spirit's control who allowed John to see the vision supernaturally
  • The lampstands represent the churches and symbolize light
  • The church is the most beautiful and valuable thing on earth
  • Seven is a sign of God's completion
  • Seven churches symbolize the church in general
  • Jesus is standing in the midst of the churches
  • Is Jesus the center of our lives?
  • We need to have Jesus in the midst of our lives

3. John's description of the glorified Lord

  • John noticed Jesus in a robe, which symbolizes Jesus' royalty
  • Jesus is the Great High Priest of the people with a golden sash, which represents his righteousness and faithfulness (Exodus 28:4)
  • Christ is holy, pure, full of wisdom, and will never die
  • Jesus has penetrating eyes to be able to see and is all-knowing with perfect knowledge of what's going on
  • He knows all about us
  • His brass feet represents his judgment
  • His voice is like the sound of many waters, and represents his authority...He has all power
  • He is in control of the leaders in the church
  • Sometimes we get possessive and think things are ours
  • His sword represents his judgment on his enemies
  • His countenance represents his glory and deity
  • Jesus placed his right hand on John to comfort him
  • We can find comfort in troubled times
  • Christ is the assurance of his glorious love and forgiveness
  • Jesus has all power (not limited power)
  • 3 Reasons why John didn't need to fear:
    • Jesus is eternal...Jesus is First and Last
    • Jesus is the Resurrected One that overcame death and is alive forevermore
    • Jesus has the keys to Hades and Death
  • Jesus is worthy to be praised!
