Background:
- Instead of worrying, we should give it to the Lord who will give us peace
- Worry, fear, and anxiety are emotions that we will experience
- Worry creates a cycle of fear and reduce focus and robs people of joy and peace
- Worry can cause people to loose their joy and peace and may even end up taking medication
- Worrying is choosing not to trust God
- It warns our present without changing our future
- Anger and worry are two destructive emotions that reveal our lack of faith in God
Key Sermon Points:
1. We need to understand how harmful worry can become
- Do not worry about our life or what we must eat or drink or wear (Matthew 25; Matthew 6:31)
- That counsel is needed so much that Jesus gives it 3 times
- Some don't believe that God can supply our physical and spiritual needs
- We must trust in the Lord with all our heart (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- Worry can affect our health and reduce our productivity and our ability to trust God
- Some worry about our finances, war, family, health issues...and things that we cannot change
- The key is that we must give it to God and take one day at a time
- How is worrying affect us right now? Are we in a good place?
- Jesus said that we should not worry because God takes care of even the birds and we are more valuable to Him than the birds
- There is a difference between worry and genuine concern
- Worrying paralyzes us, but concern move us into action because we are trusting God to do His part and we focus on doing our part
- When we think like the world, then we act like the world
- The faithful Christian is not excited about anything, but puts our concerns before God (Philippians 4:6)
- We cannot do anything without Jesus
- The cause of contentment is to seek God's kingdom and loose ourselves in obedience
- Abraham demonstrated obedience in faith (Genesis 22)
- When we are obedient, God will bless our obedience
- We must loose ourselves in obedience in order that we may finish our course that we receive from Jesus Christ (Acts 20:24)
- To seek God's kingdom is to seek souls for God's kingdom
- God saved us for a purpose to witness to others and to glorify God
2. Worry is unwise because of our future
- God is the God of tomorrow and today and eternity
- God is loving and kind and compassionate...and His love does not fail
- Some people commit to worry or think about potential problems in the future
- We cannot remove worry until we replace it with something better
- What is better:
- Prayer - worry less and pray more
- God's peace (v. 34)
- The believers' response is to trust God
- God is greater than the things that we worry about
- Worry is sin because it denies the love, wisdom, and power of God
- Worry denies God's wisdom and denies that God knows everything
- God created us and knows us (before we were conceived)
- Worry denies God power, which is enough to do what He needs to do
- Worrying is nothing but pain, but the Lord is great and greatly to be praise
- Stop worrying because worrying is destructive...start praying because God is the only one that can change things...give everything to God in prayer
